Flashspoter | This week has been an exciting moment for indie game fans with the presence of a number of new titles on various platforms, ranging from an anti-colonial heist game to a spiritual sequel from developer Little Nightmares.
Even Sony, through the state of Play event, also announced several indie games that will be present on PS5, strengthening the console's position as one of the independent developer-friendly platforms.
What's interesting about this week's wave of indie games is the return to focusing on the essence of play itself. Rope, for example, from developer Ikuo, firmly states that it wants to "maintain the essence of playing" such as Hide and seek or chase with simple rules that make you forget about time. While the Stairwell adapts the Exit 8 formula with an endless tower background.
This phenomenon shows that in the midst of graphic competition and complexity of mechanisms, games with a minimalist concept still have a place in the hearts of players looking for a different experience.
Here are a series of games that fall into the category of "LIttle Big Game" because even though they are worked on by indie developers, the quality and potential are not inferior to the games of big game developers who have sustained.
Relooted: heist action with an important message
South African Studio Nyamakop released Relooted on Steam, Epic Games Store and Xbox Series X/S at a 10 percent discount until February 24 (normal price 15 US dollars). This Game tells The Story of Nomali, a parkour expert, and his team trying to retrieve African artifacts from Western museums.
Uniquely, all artifacts in the game actually exist in the real world, making Relooted not just an action game but also a media criticism of colonialism practices. The mechanics of the game are reminiscent of Teardown—the player must carefully plan the action before escaping with the stolen goods. Although there were performance constraints on the PC, it did not reduce the power of the narrative that the developer wanted to convey. Reanimal: atmospheric horror from the creators of Little Nightmares
Tarsier Studios, the creators of Little Nightmares, have released a new game called Reanimal. Theเกม tells the story of the two brothers who go to the island to save their friends which is their former home.
Priced at $ 40, Reanimal is available on Steam, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. The game trailer shown promises a typical Tarsier psychological horror with disturbing creatures ready to confront the player.
Mewgenics: strategy Roguelike with mutant cats
Mewgenics ' long journey of development finally came to an end after it was first announced in 2012. Edmund McMillen, creator of The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, together with Tyler Glaiel presents a turn-based strategy game in which players breed cats with wild mutations and a unique ability to fight.
With over 200 hours of main campaign duration, 10 character classes (each with 75 abilities), 900 items, and hundreds of enemies and bosses, Mewgenics offers depth rarely found in similar games. Available on Steam for $ 30 ($3 off until February 24), the game received positive reviews although some critics felt its humor was not suitable for everyone.
Rogue Point: a fresh twist from the makers of Black Mesa
The team behind the legendary Half-Life remake, Crowbar Collective, released Rogue Point in Early Access on Steam. This four-player cooperative shooter adopts Tom Clancy's objective-based mission mechanics and a Counter-Strike-style economic system to unlock and upgrade equipment.
Priced at 20 US dollars (15 percent discount until February 26), Rogue Point currently only has four maps with a random layout system to maintain the freshness of the game.
A Demo that's worth a try
Ahead of Steam Next Fest, a number of exciting game demos have become available:
Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug War! from Auroch Digital and Dotemu brings a retro shooting experience in the style of the 90s with mechanics similar to Helldivers 2, including a beacon feature to summon equipment. The Game will be released on March 16 on various platforms.
Rope, a simple yet addictive line-based puzzle from developer Ikuo, offers easy rules: connect self-colored ropes to clear the board. Available at an estimated price of 3.5 US dollars when released in April.
The Mermaid Mask, the latest Detective Grimoire series from SFB Games, features hand-drawn 2D animation that is a feast for the eyes. The Demo has been updated on Steam ahead of its summer 2025 release.
Ship v Maze, an arcade game that relies on only two buttons to turn left and right, tests the player's reflexes avoiding obstacles. It will be released on April 2 for $4.
