Flashspoter - When the FPS game industry starts to get saturated with the same formula, Serious Sam: Shatterverse comes with a different approach. The latest Game in the classic franchise led by Devolver Digital carries a teamwork-based roguelite concept, a bold move that sets it apart from the majority of competitors on the market.
Developed by Behaviour Interactive, the studio behind Dead By Daylight, Shatterverse allows up to five players to act as "Sam" from different dimensions, exploring procedurally generated arenas. Instead of a linear campaign like its predecessor, the game offers a run system in which each session presents a selection of improvements that affect the strength of the team permanently.
This change places Shatterverse in a different category than FPS giants like Counter-Strike 2 or PUBG that rely on competitive session-based mechanics. In terms of structure, this game is even closer to Marvel Rivals which also carries team-based elements with a variety of characters. However, Shatterverse emphasizes the cross-session progression aspect, something that neither Marvel Rivals nor the newly released Rainbow Six Mobile has been a major focus of.
Rainbow Six Mobile itself comes as an adaptation of Ubisoft's typical tactical formula, prioritizing careful planning and one-on-one elimination. Instead, the Shatterverse chose the opposite direction: chaos, explosions and a huge number of enemies that come in waves, the hallmark inherent in the Serious Sam franchise from the very beginning.
Another uniqueness lies in its developers. Behavior Interactive, the name behind asymmetric survival horror games like Dead By Daylight for years, is now making a shift to cooperative FPS games. This creates its own unique value: experience in designing cross-player cooperation-based experiences can be a powerful capital to build a solid team coordination system in Shatterverse.
From the technical side, this game presents hand-crafted arenas that although the arenas are designed manually, the paths and challenges in each run are procedural. A combination reminiscent of Returnal or Risk of Rain 2 approach, but with the spirit of a thick old-school shooter. Also, John J. Dick, the original voice actor for Sam, joining the project adds a touch of nostalgia that is definitely not to be underestimated.
If you look at the current FPS landscape, Serious Sam: Shatterverse has a chance to fill a niche that has been rarely touched so far: a co-op roguelite with a large scale and characteristic humorous tone. While Call of Duty continues to focus on battle royale mode and competitive multiplayer, Shatterverse instead offers a relaxing yet challenging experience that can be enjoyed in short sessions without the pressure of player ratings.
There is no exact release date yet, but based on information from the developers, the game is targeted to be available on Xbox Series X/s, PC, and Xbox Cloud this year. With the first quarter drawing to a close, speculation is pointing to a launch in the second half of 2026.
Shatterverse's biggest challenge is proving that the roguelite formula can run smoothly in an FPS world that has been dominated by live service models such as Valorant or Apex Legends. However, if it manages to execute the balance between replayability, teamwork, and action intensity typical of Serious Sam, it is not impossible for this game to be a dark horse in its class.
With a bold approach and a franchise foundation that already has a loyal fan base, Serious Sam: Shatterverse shows that innovation in the FPS genre doesn't always have to be battle royale or hero shooter. Sometimes, a return to the roots, with the right new spice, can be precisely the freshest formula.
